The Albariño grape vine is a variety of white wine grape that originated in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. It is known for producing crisp, refreshing wines with distinctive flavors and aromas of citrus, green apple, and stone fruit.

One of the key characteristics of the Albariño grape is its thick skin and small berries, which give it a high level of acidity and a distinctive mineral quality. This makes it well-suited to the cool, wet climate of Galicia, where it thrives in the coastal areas near the Atlantic Ocean.

In terms of its flavor profile, Albariño wines are typically light-bodied and have a crisp, mouthwatering acidity. They often have aromas of citrus and stone fruit, as well as hints of green herbs and saline minerals. On the palate, they are typically dry and refreshing, with flavors of lemon, lime, and green apple.

In terms of food pairings, Albariño wines are often enjoyed with seafood, particularly shellfish such as oysters and mussels. They are also a good match for dishes with herb-based sauces or light, fresh salads.

In terms of its history, the Albariño grape has been grown in the Galicia region for centuries, and it is thought to have been introduced to the area by Celtic settlers. It was traditionally used as a blending grape, but in recent years it has gained popularity as a varietal wine.

Today, Albariño is one of the most widely-grown grape varieties in Spain, and it is also grown in other regions of Europe and South America. It is highly prized for its unique flavor and aromas, and it continues to be a popular choice among wine enthusiasts around the world.

Grape Color White
Primary Use Wine
Wine Color White
Variety Origin Spain and Portugal
Zone Range: 6-12
Growth Habit Upright
Suggested Distance Between Vines 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft
Vine Training System: Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP)

Vertical shoot positioned (VSP) training is used primarily for upright-growing cultivators, especially those that benefit from improved exposure to sunlight that minimizes summer fruit rots and/or increases potential wine quality. As compared with Top Wire Cordon (TWC) training, VSP is much more labor-intensive due to the need for summer shoot positioning, leaf removal, and summer (top) hedging. VSP training employ a fruiting wire at 30-36", and usually three sets of catch wires at 10-12" intervals above the fruiting wire.
