Wyldewood Elderberry

Wyldewood elderberry is a cultivar of the native elderberry shrub, prized for its large clusters of fruit and attractive flowers. It is an excellent choice for both ornamental gardens and edible landscaping, as the berries can be used in various culinary applications, including jams, syrups, and wines.

Physical Characteristics
Height: Typically grows between 6 to 12 feet (1.8 to 3.7 meters).
Spread: Can reach a width of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters).
Leaves: Compound leaves made up of 5 to 9 leaflets, each 3 to 5 inches long, with a deep green color and serrated edges.
Flowers: Produces large, flat-topped clusters (umbels) of small, creamy white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Fruit: Dark purple to black berries that ripen in late summer. These berries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants but should be cooked before consumption to neutralize potential toxins.

Soil Requirements
Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, moist soil enriched with organic matter but can adapt to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils.
Prepare the Soil: Amend the soil with organic matter such as compost to improve fertility and drainage.

Planting:

Seedlings/Transplants: Dig a hole that is twice the width and the same depth as the root ball.
Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface.
Backfill the hole with soil and lightly tamp it down to eliminate air pockets.
Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help establish roots. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the first growing season.

Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (such as wood chips or straw) around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Fertilization: In early spring, you may apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage robust growth, but avoid over-fertilizing.
