Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana')

The Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress is a charming, slow-growing evergreen shrub with a compact, rounded shape. Known for its lush, rich green foliage that holds its color year-round, this shrub brings elegance and texture to any garden. With its dense, feathery foliage, it’s perfect for small landscapes, foundation plantings, or as part of a mixed border. Its refined, graceful appearance makes it a great choice for adding structure and contrast to your garden while remaining relatively low-maintenance.

Key Features:

Size: Grows 2-4 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for smaller spaces or as a low hedge.
Foliage: Soft, dark green foliage arranged in a layered, fan-like pattern. The leaves have a unique, almost fern-like texture, providing year-round visual interest.
Growth Habit: Slow-growing with a dense, compact form that maintains its neat shape without much pruning.
Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 5-8, making it suitable for a variety of climates.
Maintenance: Low-maintenance and tolerant of a range of garden conditions. It is resistant to many pests and diseases.

Planting Instructions:

Sunlight: Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress does best in partial shade to full sun. While it can tolerate some shade, it will develop the most vibrant color and dense foliage when planted in a spot that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight each day.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, acidic to slightly alkaline soil. It thrives in moist, loamy soil but can adapt to a variety of soil types as long as they drain well.
Space: This shrub has a naturally compact growth habit. For hedges, plant them about 2-3 feet apart. For a specimen plant, space them at least 3 feet apart to allow room for their rounded form.

Planting Steps:

Dig the Hole: Dig a hole that’s about twice the size of the root ball. The hole should be as deep as the root ball itself, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
Prepare the Soil: If your soil is heavy or clayey, consider mixing in some organic matter like compost to improve drainage. The Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress prefers slightly acidic soil, so if you’re unsure of your soil’s pH, you might want to test it and amend if necessary.
Place the Plant: Gently remove the plant from its container, taking care not to disturb the roots too much. Position the shrub in the hole, ensuring it is level with the surrounding soil.
Backfill the Hole: Fill in around the root ball with the native soil, pressing it gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

Care After Planting:

Watering: After planting, water the Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist (but not soggy) during the first growing season while the plant establishes its roots. Once established, this shrub is somewhat drought-tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells will help keep it healthy.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the stem to prevent rot.

The Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress is a perfect addition to any landscape, offering year-round beauty, texture, and structure with minimal care. Its rich green foliage and neat, compact growth make it ideal for small gardens or as an elegant accent in larger landscapes. Whether you’re looking for a formal hedge, a foundation plant, or simply an eye-catching shrub for your garden, the Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress is sure to impress.
