Canada Rhubarb is a variety of rhubarb that is native to Canada. It is prized for its sweet and tart flavor, as well as its bright red color. This rhubarb is grown in parts of Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia and is harvested in the spring and summer months. It is a great addition to pies, jams, and other desserts. Canada Rhubarb is also a great source of Vitamin K, which helps to improve bone health.
First, choose a location in your garden where the rhubarb will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Canada rhubarb is a hardy, perennial plant, so it will do well in a variety of soil types. Make sure the area is well-drained, and amend the soil with plenty of organic matter before planting.
When it comes time to plant, dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the rhubarb. Place the root ball in the hole, and cover with soil. Water the area thoroughly. As the Canada rhubarb grows, thin the plants to a spacing of two to three feet. During the growing season, water the Canada rhubarb regularly, and fertilize twice a year with a balanced fertilizer.
Harvesting crimson rhubarb is easy. Cut the stalks when they are at least one inch thick. Make sure to leave some of the stalk on the plant so that it can continue to grow. Once harvested, store rhubarb in the refrigerator for up to one week.
